7th Grade Language Arts Essential Outcomes -
Every day, we will strive to cultivate a love of reading and writing in our students, and develop lifelong habits of reading and writing. It is of equal importance that the students will work on mastery of the following essential outcomes:

EO1 - Read, write, and spell general academic and content-specific vocabulary through:

-structural analysis (prefix, root word, suffix)

-context clues

-phonetic awareness

EO2 - Identify, explain, and write based on the characteristics of narrative and informational genres such as:
-textbooks (including text features)
-myths
-fantasies
-science fiction
-realistic fiction
-historical fiction
-drama
-articles
-informational texts
-biographies
-autobiographies
-essay
-descriptive
-poetry (lyric vs. free verse)

EO3 - Demonstrate comprehension skills and identify organizational patterns such as:
-finding the main idea and supporting details
-sequential
-summarizing
-cause/effect
-compare/contrast
-fact/opinion
-problem/solution
-spatial

-proposition/support

EO4 - Demonstrate comprehension and writing skills such as:
-establishing a purpose for reading and writing
-inferring and predicting
-analyzing author’s strengths and weaknesses
-making connections
-considering the author’s purpose and audience
-understanding analogies
-generating and answering different types of questions

EO5 - Identify, define, and apply elements of narrative text such as:
-characters (major/minor, protagonist/antagonist)
-characterization (static vs. dynamic characters)
-setting
-point-of-view (1st person, 3rd person limited, and 3rd person omniscient)
-plot (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution)
-conflict (character vs. character, etc.)
-theme

EO6 - Identify, define, and apply literary devices such as:
-foreshadowing
-flashback
-irony
-imagery
-suspense
-symbolism
-mood
-tone
-figurative language (simile, metaphor, idiom, personification, hyperbole)
-sound devices (alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme)

EO7 - Communicate ideas through reading and speaking fluently with:
-accuracy

EO8 - Write effectively using the main steps in the writing process and the 6 Traits, such as:
-planning/prewriting
-drafting
-revising
-editing
-publishing
-organization
-voice
-sentence fluency

EO9 Identify, locate, and evaluate information in ways such as:
-using multiple sources
-appropriate use of social media
-using ethical behavior to avoid plagiarism

EO10 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English such as:

-capitalization (I, proper nouns, beginning of sentences)

-punctuation (end punctuation, apostrophes, commas)

-spelling (phonetic awareness)

-consistent verb tense

- Consistent P.O.V.

-can write complete sentences and vary sentence structure

-subject/verb agreement

-correct use of dialogue

-correct use of homonyms, ie:There/Their/They’re; to/too/two; here/hear; your/you’re; then/than, peak/peek/pique
