Language Arts:
Course Description:
This class seeks to develop literacy skills, specifically reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will various types and genres of literature with a variety of aims. These include: vocabulary recognition, reading comprehension, identification of literary elements, and analysis/discuss of themes.

Texts:
The primary text for 8th grade language arts is The Language of Literature by McDougal-Littell ©2006. Other texts will be used to supplement the curriculum and develop themes.


Pre-AP Language Arts: 
Course Description:
This class seeks to develop literacy skills, specifically reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will various types and genres of literature with a variety of aims. These include: vocabulary recognition, reading comprehension, identification of literary elements, and analysis/discuss of themes. Pre-AP students will be expected to synthesize a variety of information in developing and sharing informed opinions, and will work on delivering those opinions with style and eloquence.

Texts:
The 8th grade textbook is The Language of Literature by McDougal-Littell ©2006. Required novels include Lord of the Flies by William Golding and A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. Other texts will be used to supplement the curriculum and develop themes. Required texts include at-home readings both over summer and winter breaks. This is consistent with the Advanced Placement model.
